How to reach New Buffalo, Michigan

In keeping with the tradition of the iPlasmaNano series, the location of iPlasmaNano-IX is in a smaller city (New Buffalo, Michigan) near water.  Because of this, it is a little more difficult to get to as there is no major airport in the city itself.  The two best travel options are to

  • Fly into Chicago, Illinois and either rent a car, take the train, or take an airport shuttle to the venue
  • Fly into South Bend, Indiana (location of the University of Notre Dame) and allow David Go and his team to shuttle you to the venue.

To facilitate these options, the organizing committee has created a Google Spreadsheet where people can coordinate ride sharing (for those renting a car) or a shuttle (for those not wishing to navigate the train system).  David Go will arrange for one or two shuttles for transportation to from Chicago O’Hare airport to the conference venue, based on the number of people that sign up.  For this reason, he asks that people indicate their travel plans by June 15, 2018. More details on travel are listed below.

 

Major international airports within driving distance from the Marina Grand include:

Chicago-O’Hare (ORD), Chicago, Illinois (~95 miles, ~2 hours by automobile – note that there are tolls)

Chicago-Midway (MDW), Chicago, Illinois (~70 miles, ~90 minutes by automobile – note thatthere are tolls)

Detroit Metropolitan Airport (DTW), Detroit, Michigan (~200 miles, ~3 hours by automobile)

 

Close regional airports include:

Kalamazoo-Battle Creek International Airport (AZO), Kalamazoo, Michigan (~75 miles, ~75 minutes by automobile)

South Bend International Airport (SBN), South Bend, Indiana (~30 miles, ~45 minutes by automobile)*

*For those flying through SBN, David Go will help provide a shuttle service.  The SBN is only 10 minutes from the University of Notre Dame.  

 

Train from Chicago

Amtrak Trains (https://www.amtrak.com/) run from Union Station in Chicago, Illinois, the Detroit Train Station in Detroit, Michigan, the Kalamazoo Station in Kalamazoo, Michigan, and the Amtrak Station in South Bend, Indiana. Typical prices range from $25-$75 USD one way. The train drops off directly in New Buffalo, only a few minute walk from the Marina Grand Resort.

Specific Instructions from Chicago O’Hare

  • Take the Blue Line train from O’Hare to the Clinton stop in downtown Chicago.
  • Walk (~5 min) to Union Station and take Amtrak train to New Buffalo, Michigan
